Liberate CEO Ellie shares her 5 wellbeing essentials.
I love making food in general, and things like sourdough, which take a long time to make, are better for you and your gut health – something that affects everything in your body. But I mostly make it because the process makes me happy, and giving food to friends and family seems to make everyone happy too!
Yoga helps me with everything, from keeping me flexible – which is great for things like the arthritis I’ve had in my hand for years and stops me from making ‘old people’ noises when I bend down to pick things up – to building strength. It also helps me recognise when I’m stressed and gives me tools to destress, even in the middle of a meeting, simply by controlling my breathing and focusing on where it is.
I’m one of those people who needs to spend time with others to ‘refill my cup’. It energises me because I feel that friends are the family you choose for yourself, and these relationships are just as fulfilling and important to me as my actual family.
Yes, it’s electric, but just being out in the fresh air, avoiding the stress of driving a car, and not having to worry about parking is great for my mental health. It’s a bit less enjoyable when it’s belting down with rain, but even then, it can give you the wake-up call you need in the morning!
I go boxing once a week, and not only is it great for fitness and cardio, but it also builds confidence from a self-defence perspective. I have to concentrate so hard on what I’m doing that my brain completely switches off – I can’t think about anything else.
